William Christopher Handy (1873-1958) was an African-American musician
, composer, and band leader. He was a major force in popularizing blues music in the first decades of the 20th century. He had a number of big hits, including "Memphis Blues" and "St. Louis Blues."
We offer here a biographical essay reproduced from

, July, 1942, titled "Music's 'Handy' Man." It is boldly signed by Handy on the front, just above the blurb promoting his 1941 autobiography

. Printed on trifold paper, it measures 9" x 5 1/2" folded, 9" x 17" unfolded.
Condition:
The previous owner made several notes and marks, primarily in pencil and colored pencil; there is a very small tear to the lower right margin of the front page; there are two creases, one of which touches the 'd' in Handy's signature. Overall, very good.
