    Description

    A colorful majolica smoke set with striker depicting a black man playing the accordion with three melons by his side. The piece is nicely modeled with great attention to detail and hand painted in vibrant colors. The three open melons are designed to hold cigars and matches and there is also a recessed ashtray in the base. Condition is excellent with no chips or cracks. There is some age crazing and the usual factory  mold, glaze and paint irregularities of old majolica pottery. Except for impressed numbers on the base the set is unmarked; it is most likely Austrian or German in origin and dates from circa 1895.
    Size approx. 7 3/4" in height and the base measures approx. 6 1/8" by 4 3/4".
