George Jones English Majolica "Park" Pitcher
Offering here at this evening's first auction, a George Jones English majolica "Park" pitcher, in excellent original condition. No chips, cracks or repairs. The aqua glazed interior shows a bit of faint glaze crazing, to be expected with age and use. Does not in any way detract from the overall appearance. The rare pitcher measures 5 1/2" in height. A very pleasing naturalistic design, with large green leaves, flowers, grass and small mottled frogs at the base, all set against a tree bark background. a fitting tree branch handle completes the jug. The rim is finished in a yellow glaze. The base is stamp incised with an English registry mark and what looks to be the initials GJ incised in a circle. (see photo). Circa 1875.
