    W.C. Handy (born William Christopher Handy) was an American blues composer and musician,
    widely known as the "Father of the Blues." In 1913 he started his own publishing company, the
    first African American to do so. His most successful songs include: "Memphis Blues," "Beale Street
    Blues," Saint Louis Blues." Bessie Smith's 1925 Columbia Records recording of "Saint Louis Blues"
    with Louis Armstrong is considered by many to be one of the finest recordings of the 1920s.
